Laid-back former rancher with an eye for the ladies
“Patch” Fields took over his family farm at the age of 17, after his father, Tenacity Fields, died while riding fence during a blizzard. Where his father had been cruel and heartless, Patch was compassionate and generous. It was a hard life but he saw no point in making it harder where it didn’t need to be. Ranch hands were treated with respect, and in turn, they grew to respect their new boss.
He married young to a feisty red-head named Bess, after a whirlwind courtship. Some called it a rocky marriage but they saw it as a wild ride.
When the War broke out, Patch signed up immediately to do the right thing. He met Chen and they became best friends. It was Chen’s dying wish that Patch look after his son, Zhaozhou. The young man was strange, but Patch would never shirk a duty to his old friend.
Now he roams the ‘Verse with a rag-tag crew, trying to do the right thing, no matter the consequence. And the eyepatch? Well, that’s a story for another time.
